Dr Pierre Smith
Dr Pierre Smith is a founding member of POGS and practises across both Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with special interests in high-risk obstetrics and advanced laparoscopic surgery.
Dr Smith is a strong advocate for women’s health and believes patients should be well informed, supported, and involved in decisions about their care. He values the doctor–patient relationship as a partnership built on trust, clear communication, and shared decision-making. Pregnancy can be an exciting time, but it can also bring uncertainty. Dr Smith’s approach is to provide calm, structured guidance throughout pregnancy, with careful planning for birth and clear “what if” plans should complications arise. He aims to support a normal physiological birth when it is safe to do so, while maintaining a safety-first focus for both mother and baby.
Dr Smith supports vaginal birth when it is clinically appropriate and believes it is often the best option for women and babies. At the same time, he respects a woman’s right to make an informed decision about mode of birth, including elective caesarean section, after discussion of the benefits, risks, and recovery considerations. His philosophy in labour is that patience is often a virtue—but never passive; when urgent action is required, he acts decisively and works closely with the hospital team to ensure safe outcomes.
He provides both general and high-risk obstetric care. His gynaecology practice includes colposcopy, office gynaecology, and operative gynaecology. Surgical interests include laparoscopic endometriosis surgery, vaginal prolapse reconstruction/repair, labiaplasty, endometrial ablation, and laparoscopic, abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy.
In 2016, Dr Smith received the Doctor of the Year Award at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital in recognition of patient-centred care. He served as Head of Department of Obstetrics at St John of God Mt Lawley until the obstetric unit closed in late 2023. Dr Smith is also a fully qualified General Practitioner and previously worked for ten years in rural Queensland in procedural general practice.
